Song Spotlight: Talk2Strangers' Fawn (a night at The Goldfish)

When online sets were the rage in 2020, I caught Talk2Strangers via Los Angeleno (from what I can tell, the website still posts articles on an intermittent basis). It was an artsy set in the vain of other Los Angeles notables like Bloody Death Skull and Jess Joy (since moved back to her home state of Louisiana). You can see that performance here

With a week to go before Halloween (or one could say some 5 years later), I got to catch a live set at The Goldfish. It being the Spooky Season, having them at The Goldfish made perfect programming sense. If you check out their Instagram page, you'll see the costume that was worn being used in the music video to their latest release "Fawn."

As can be seen via my photos, the costume was on the bulky side, which resulted in some amusing mishaps. Almost immediately into the set, they ended up kicking over their drink. Members from the other bands for the night came in to help with one taking away the cup and another coming in to clean up the spilled liquid. Then just a song or two later, the electric surge protector was turned off by the hem of the gown. That required a reboot of the computer. Another mishap was avoided; however. When going for the guitar, it was a tight squeeze getting that all settled without toppling the fawn antlers' inspired hat. As can be seen via the photos, that would be a difficult task for any individual, but it was done with slow and diligent success.

The night was ended with a performance on the venue dance floor. I was partially concerned that we'd see a face plant as they attempted to step down from the stage, but all went well and the set ended with the crowd dancing with joy.

Comment of the set: Dance away your pain.

The song spotlight goes to "Fawn" which was the inspiration behind the costume. The music video was directed by the one and only Tolliver. The song was introduced with a quick psychology definition of fight, flight, freeze, fawn.

Fight: kick the f*ck out of here.
Flight: get me out of here.
Freeze: I'm frozen
Fawn: What can I do for you, can I make this better for you.

The song is an upbeat dance tune with a soul underpinning that contrast with the indecision of the lyrics.

I never know which way to turn
Or which is the way to go
It's so hard to make decisions
