Song Spotlight: Addie Addie Addie's Industry (an afternoon at P.F. Candle Co. during Echo Park Rising)

For the second year in a row, I was one of the official photographers of Echo Park Rising. I decided I would try to hit up as many venues as possible while still photographing some of my favorite bands. One of the smaller venues was P.F. Candle Co. They only had three bands playing, all one after the other. That meant I had a very tight window to photograph the venue. I decided I was going to photograph the first artist up: Addie Addie Addie (the moniker for Addie Weyrich).

She was up at 3 p.m. That set time conflicted with Hysteria (you can read my Zebulon review here) at The Echo and then I wanted to attempt to photograph the first band up at the Echoplex. So there was a bookend going on there. How did it work out? I shot the first two songs of Hysteria then walked the 0.3 miles (per Google) to the P.F. Candle Co to catch three songs of Addie Addie Addie before walking another 0.3 miles back to the Echoplex. Take into account having to wait at stoplights and squeezing through crowded sidewalks -- not that easy.

I will say it was a good decision. I rushed my way to P.F. Candle Co. and was shocked when I got to the door. People were hanging out on the sidewalk to catch the set. I pushed pass them and it was packed inside. After finishing her song that I caught the tail end of, she turned to the people hanging outside and encouraged them to come inside, making it even more crowded.

She was jumping, hair flinging, high kicks, and going metal as she play acted using her teeth on her guitarist's strings. Her background which "spans television, film, improvisational theater, dance, music and martial arts" no doubt helped in her physical performance. I don't know if the venue was packed with her fans or not, but her lyrics had people screaming back the lyrics. Sometimes the lyrics weren't exactly ones that I would think would stick with people such as, "white Toyota!" All it took was the prompt of, "Punch what!" It really was a fun and energizing set -- even though I only caught three-ish songs.

Moment of the set: stickers were handed out to those who had learned the name of the person (previously unknown to them) standing next to them.

I'm going with the last song that I caught to highlight here: "Industry." She introduced the song by saying she would try to tone down the lyrics as she knew there were children in the audience. That commitment only lasted briefly as the word sh*t was screamed out throughout. Is this song about the music industry? No, it sounds more directed at the television / movie industry -- though I suspect it is all interchangeable.
