Song Spotlight: Anna Thoresen's Dear Soulmate (a night at Hotel Ziggy)

I will admit that the first thing I noticed when Anna Thoresen and her band hit the WFNM showcase at Hotel Ziggy was Maria Grace Ono on guitar. I just happened to catch her playing guitar a few weeks earlier for Julez And The Rollerz. You can read my blog post about that particular night here. The next thing I noticed was her bassist, Danielle Koppel who had a little stuffed animal hanging from a belt loop and there was a Pippi Longstocking quality. Ignore all that observation about Koppel, what really caught my attention was her boyfriend (assuming there is a connection there) was feeding her French fries that they'd bought from the Hotel Ziggy bar. I've had a couple of those French fries. I can say they're addicting.

When Thoresen hit the stage, I was pretty sure I was in for a punk-rock type set, but she flipped the script on me with the R&B opening song "Limit." Her songs revolved around her failed relationships and search for a soulmate. "Home-wrecker, I was down and dirty. I was way too flirty . . .

Her set included a cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." The audience seemed unaware of who Cyndi Lauper is so Thoresen told them, "She's very popular." If Gen Z doesn't know who she is, well those of a slightly older age definitely know who Lauper is. I still have memories of listening to her music. You can see the music video here. Interestingly, the music opens with Lauper watching the movie The Garden of Allah staring Marlene Dietrich and Charles Boyer. I've seen many movies by these particular actors, but never that specific movie. Anyways, I'd say those two were known for their sexy romantic movie roles.

After "Time After Time," Thoresen launched into an unreleased song called "Voodoo Doll" that took inspiration from Lauper. "Dirty Laundry" was about "not wanting to be treated as dirty laundry by someone." It was her most recent release. She closed out her set with "Lonely" that strikes the heart with the lyrics, "And now it's late at night (late at night). The dark came so quick. And my TV isn't working right (isn't working right)." The song had her taking her vocals to Sunset Strip levels.

Though she's had her problems finding lasting love, she's still isn't giving up hope. Her song "Dear Soulmate" was introduced with, "It's very near and dear subject to my heart. Maybe even here tonight. Hopefully, they're hear my call."

The song is an in depth thought process of the qualities of a soulmate. One of them being able to tell when she's attempting to change her personality just so that person might find her more attractive as a potential soulmate:

Like that one time you asked me
What I like to watch on Netflix

. . . .

"I just watched The Matrix recently"
You rolled your eyes at me and said
"Have you seen Love Actually?"

She'll put her heart and soul into singing those lyrics.

Thoresen is an old soul who listens to music from the 1980s and romance movies from the 2000s.

Setlist: Limit, Dear Soulmate, Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper cover), Voodoo Doll, Dirty Laundry, Lonely.
