Song Spotlight: Milly's Drip From The Fountain (a night at Zebulon)

Sept 7th, 2019. That was a brilliant day of music and was the first time I came across Milly (the band is fronted by Brendan Dyer who arrived in Los Angeles via Connecticut). It started off by heading to La Tierra de La Culebra Park where I caught a midday set by Gracie Gray -- one of my favorites. Then that night it was off to The House of Machines -- talk about a venue that I miss just as much as The Satellite. That night was a stunning line-up that included GLAARE (unfortunately, broke up in 2022), Spare Parts for Broken Hearts, Tennis System (appear to have wiped their social media), and Milly.

Flash forward a few years and I got to cover Milly in 2024 for US Rocker Music, which you can read here. I guess you can describe the set as being their announcement party for their Your Own Becoming album where they played songs from the album, which were all listed in code on their setlist. That showed an amusing side of the band.

I recently got to cover the band again for US Rocker Music when they opened up the night for Nova Twins at Zebulon. You can read about that set here. Unknown to me, but it was a pleasant surprise, the band recently took on a new drummer. The new drummer is Alison Berry (who I've followed since 2021 via Moonily).

Since catching that set in 2024, I've enjoyed their song "Drip From The Fountain" which their record label Dangerbird Records describes as such:

"By far the most infectious song of their entire catalog with an explosive chorus and airtight melodic hooks that recall early Death Cab For Cutie, the track serves as the North Star for the entire LP,  capturing the sense of clock-ticking despair . . ."

One can't disagree with the explosive description. Alison Berry starting it off with a beat. You could see Dyer doing a baseball pitch windup and then blow up the song with the first guitar chord. The whole band took up the noise level to 10, which turned up the heat in the venue. It didn't take long for the air conditioning to start up. Was it coincidence or a direct result of the band playing?

And the dust holds the time
I know I know it's running out and there's nothing left to say

Milly setlist: Blocked On Everything, Drip From The Fountain, Nothing To Learn From, Grab The Wheel, Living Days Again, Star Thistle Blossom, Bittersweet Mary, Spilling Ink.
