Creatrix Jem Presents put on a jazz night at Club Tee Gee that featured Will Brahm celebrating his Distance to Empty album release. Opening up the night was the Jake Leckie Trio. Brahm mention that musicians shouldn't have more than three one word song titles in their setlist. I counted five such song titles on the 1 hour and twenty minute set. I guess a cardinal rule was broken, but I don't think the audience cared about that particular rule. The venue was packed with people who got to enjoy jazz as well as mini cupcakes that Brahm brought to celebrate the record release as well as his birthday. As I was leaving for the night, I grabbed one.

Per his bio, the following is written:
His signature trio sound of piercing emotive melodies and lush chordal backdrops alongside bass and drums create a musical experience far greater than the sum of it's parts.

That trio included Chris Wabich on drums and Francisco Ojeda on bass. The music is completely instrumental with a jazz new age sound. Playing his Fender guitar under the golden lights of the venue, Brahm shows his emotions via his facial expressions. Sometimes he had a broad smile. Other times he pursed his lips. While I watched Wabich on the drums, I was thinking of a hybrid Jim Carrey and Christopher Lloyd. Ojeda played the bass while sitting on a monitor with eyes glued on Brahm to get the perfect music coordination.
I've got to say, I've been catching a lot of jazz sets recently. I would say I've seen more jazz sets over the last 6 months than I saw say in the 5 years prior to venues shutting down. I don't mind it at all as I do on occasion tune the radio to KJazz. I put Wayne Redfern on my 2024favorite new bands to me list, which you can read here. I also wrote about noworriesLMK and their song "Trying for you" and did a review of a Dirtydom & The Vibe set. These sets have been played at Club Tee Gee, Zebulon, and Hotel Ziggy respectively. Basically, jazz is popping up everywhere and the bands are just playing to the older set (like me), but is drawing plenty of young people.

As mentioned, Jake Leckie Trio opened up the night. Leckie played the stand up bass while Randal Fisher played the saxophone and Shawn Baltazor was on drums. He mentioned that his albums were named after the moments of life surrounding a home. His first album is called The Adobe. He said his second album called The Guide is about the people who help you find a home. His third album is called Planter of Seeds. He is considering called his fourth album Trees and Roots. The audience clapped politely during the individual improvisational moments of the trio. My amusing observation: I was wondering why Baltazor was keeping his wallet atop his snare drum.
