San Diego based Elizabeth Bowersox came up north to play the Bigfoot Lodge on a recent Friday night. The night was a collaboration between two Americana-country promotors: Americana Joy and Small Town Friday Nights. This is embarrassing to admit, but when I was walking up to the Bigfoot Lodge, I saw Jack from The Doohickeys standing outside next to Bowersox who was wearing a bright red cowgirl hat. Perhaps it is time to head off to the optometrist, because I was thinking for sure that was Haley (okay, okay, Haley wears blue). As I walked closer, I was like, oops. Hey, maybe I did right by giving Jack the heads up about a recently (enough) opened venue in Highland Park, Oblivion.

Her bio has the following description of her sound, "Although classically trained in voice, Bowersox finds her stride in the honky-tonks, showcasing her technical precision among a freewheeling country sound."
One highlight of the set was "Surfliner." It is a song about taking the Surfliner up to Los Angeles on a regular basis. Why is she traveling the 120 miles from San Diego to Los Angeles? It so happens that she is dating Jack. And this specific night was their 1 year anniversary, having met when she played a set in Los Angeles. I loved the fact that the steel guitar was made to sound like a locomotive horn throughout the song. The song got the Warbringer Whiskey crew to hand out drinks to the band.

Her cover of the Brooks & Dunn "Boot Scootin' Boogie" got the two step dancers out on the floor. "Honky Tonk Angels" also inspired those dancers. True love was in the air as "Shootin' Star" is an unreleased song that was "inspired by all the magic happening in my life lately." She kept an eye on those dancers, because she pointed out to one couple and their dance moves, "Wow, that was hot."

The song spotlight goes to most recent release, "Red Hot Summer," a rapid firing country tune that highlights the fact that Southern California is becoming a hotspot for country music. Prior to starting off the song, she called up her friend Jessa to show off some dance moves for the song. Earlier in the year, I crossed paths with Jessa at Bar Lubitsch and, if you so wish, you can read my Song Spotlight for "Half Naked." A song inspired by Jack? The timing fits. She brought a floor fan for the night and her hair was wind-tossed by an imagined hot summer breeze.
