Captain America: The First Avenger. We have the runt of the litter, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), attempting to join the military to go fight Hitler. But he’s the runt with health problems and the military won’t take him. His determination catches the eye of Dr. Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci) and his character wins over Colonel Chester Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). He is recruited to join in an experiment.
Due to German sabotage, the experiment ends with Steve Rogers and instead of being part of a group of might warriors he is sent off to raise war bonds as well as entertaining American troops. When sent to Italy, he finds out that his dear friend has been captured by the Germans. He is determined to save him and in the process finds himself up against the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving).
I wasn’t that into this movie. The raising of war bonds might have been meant as an amusing moment in the movie, but I just found it irritating diversion in the movie. The aim is to find Captain America taking on Red Skull, not dealing with him getting sent to the sidelines. Yes, it is something that had to be dealt with, but we didn’t need musical numbers to tell us this story.
And then we come to Red Skull. Here’s my big issue that probably is meaningless, but how in the world did Nazi Germany allow someone to gain so much power. You’d think even the German army would be out there trying to destroy Red Skull. Maybe a stupid complaint, but it just ate away at me while I was watching the movie.
