Battle: Los Angeles. Staff Sergeant Michael Nantz (Aaron Eckhart) just wants to retire. He’s spent 20 years in the marines and he knows it is time to go. But events won’t allow it to happen. A meteor shower is hitting off the coast of Los Angeles and in fact in other cities, as well. He is assigned to lead a platoon that will help with the evacuation. It doesn’t seem like that tough of an assignment (though via the look of his face, he feels stressed by it) when compared to his front line assignments, but it soon becomes apparent that this isn’t some meteor shower, this in fact is an alien invasion. Not good.
For what it is, I enjoyed this movie though I have to admit that I thought Daybreakers from last year was better done (not that Daybreakers was in the alien invasion genre, but you did have vampires taking over the world). There were two scenes that did get under my skin. The “I remember” speech towards the end of the movie by Michael Nantz was just over-the-top by a mile. And also towards the end of the movie there is a moment where the action happens in the pre-dawn light and then we have a quick switch to what looks like mid-morning. I’m not exactly sure the sun rises so quickly in Los Angeles. But never mind those quibbles, this is a movie that gets you cheering for the David as he faces Goliath.
